This chilly weather in Boston is never-ending. At first, I thought spring had finally arrived when the city warmed up last week, but now, it’s like the Weather gods said, “Gotcha!” It’s currently 40 degrees here in the city, when it should be 60… why?!
I decided to think back to sunnier days when P and I road tripped down from Arizona to San Carlos, Mexico, a little quiet beach town tucked within the Gulf of California. Let’s be clear. San Carlos was fabulous. Driving the 6 hours through drug-trafficking, high crime Nogales, Mexico to get there was NOT. Let’s just say that P and I decided to make a quick stop for a bite to eat at a street-side taco stand, and we felt so uncomfortable (even P, which is rare) that we left without even checking out the menu. We drove the rest of the way without stopping, except to get gas and take a bathroom break. When we reached the town of San Carlos, P and I had forgotten all about our encounter with possible drug lords and were welcomed with a gorgeous sunset.
San Carlos was the perfect getaway for us. The town was quiet and small. The people (locals and expats) were friendly. And the food was amazing. Probably the best shrimp, octopus, and fish tacos I have ever had. The beaches were just what we needed. Of the two nights that we stayed in San Carlos, we only did one activity. Ocean kayaking with an awesome tour guide who gave us a history lesson of the town. Other than that, we just relaxed on the beach, at the pool, and on our hotel room balcony. We brought in the new year in a local bar with party hats, beers, and tacos. Nothing crazy. Our drive back to Arizona was much less eventful. We were too giddy with sun and tacos to care about any drug lords hijacking our car (although…this time, we didn’t make any stops until we were on U.S. territory)… P and I will definitely be back! But maybe by plane instead of car…
