Our Austrian friends came to visit last weekend, and we decided to take them up to Mendocino, a place highly recommended by both friends and family. We thought that Mendocino was only a couple of hours away, and planned to really explore Mendocino. Unfortunately, the drive up was more like four to five hours … Whoops…. (The one time we didn’t google map our drive to our destination…)
We tried breaking up the drive by making multiple stops along the way up Highway 1, and I’m glad we did! The views were just so breathtaking! I was so sure that the coastlines in Mendocino and up to Mendocino were going to mirror the cliffs and views along Monterey County. But, the rock formations, vegetation, and wildlife are completely unique and the ocean up north beats to its own drum.
When we finally reached Mendocino, it was late afternoon. We had a quick bite at Patterson’s Pub and then it was off to the Bluffs for the sunset. Mendocino is quite the romantic little town with charming boutiques lining Main Street and B&Bs on every corner. For us and our two Austrian visitors, it was just a little bit too quiet and sleepy for this particular weekend, and the drive up and back down to the city for just the weekend was tiring to say the least. But, our friends got a glimpse of a less touristy getaway weekend and views to last them a lifetime!
When you have more than just a weekend and you’re looking for a romantic or quiet getaway, Mendocino is your town. We’ll definitely be back!
