For P’s birthday, I surprised him with a long weekend getaway to Big Sur. Since we were close to California’s central coast, we took the opportunity and drove two hours south of Big Sur to the beautiful Morro Bay.
Little did P know, I had another surprise up my sleeve. Our good friends from Boston recently moved to Santa Barbara. Despite having them on the west coast, it was still difficult to see them because of the 5+ hour drive between the Bay Area and Santa Barbara. Since, we were already going to be 3 hours south in San Simeon visiting the Hearst Castle, I asked our friends if they were available to drive up and join us for lunch and a day of exploring in Morro Bay. They gladly agreed. Of course, P wasn’t aware of any of this and was genuinely surprised and ecstatic to see our friends pop out of from behind the restaurant!
Hugs, screams, and laughter ensued, and I was patting myself on the back for not giving up the surprise (I’m so bad at keeping surprises…)
We had a seafood lunch at Galley Seafood Grill with a view of Morro rock. There was so much to catch up on, and we breathed a little easier when we realized that we had the whole day to update each other on our new beginnings in both in Santa Barbara and the Bay Area.
Afterwards, we walked along the pier to the famous rock to check out the surfers and the crazy killer high waves crashing along the rocks. This little piece of the central coast was an unexpected slice of paradise. The waves were mesmerizing, families of otters floated along the pier, and the seafood was pretty darn good. Thanks again to our awesome friends for making it up the coast to see us! You’ve been good to us, Morro Bay!
