For Valentine’s Day, P surprised me with a day trip to Northern Monterey for a morning kayaking tour through Elkhorn Slough.
We started the day with a big breakfast at Moss Landing Cafe, filling our bellies with plenty of steak and eggs before our 2.5 hours on the water. Then we headed to Kayak Connection where we watched a short video on preserving marine and wild life in Elkhorn Slough and suited up for the kayaks.
Despite the morning fog, we saw a slew of lazy seals sunbathing on the shoreline, plenty of playful otters, and hundreds of different species of birds. The most amazing sitings were the mama otters with their new born pups, floating on the water and staring at the human passerbys in their kayaks. What made this experience truly amazing was how close we got to these incredible creatures! We kept our distance, but some of these otters were especially curious and fun that I actually started to get nervous that they would start climbing onto our kayak (which apparently happens sometimes…)!
I was expecting a candlelit dinner, roses, and wine for Valentine’s Day, but this was so much better! I love that we got to do something new and explore more in the Bay Area!
