Family Travel Guide: Prague with Toddlers

When Aidan was shy of 2 years old, we traveled through Prague, Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest by train in early October and it was so worth it! Our 3 day stay in Prague was particularly memorable and I wanted to share our brilliant tips and favorite kid-friendly things to do and eat! Prague is definitely a top family travel destination!

Here are our top toddler travel essentials that we used for this trip and thought I would also share our tips on traveling with kids (and jetlag).

Where to Stay

We stayed in a rented apartment in Prague city center which we found to be a great location to get around and see all of the top attractions. The apartment was great for cooking breakfast, preparing snacks and heating milk for Aidan. We also liked having laundry in the unit. If you prefer a hotel, there are tons of hotel options in Prague city center that you can choose from.

Best Things to Do in Prague with Toddlers

(1) Sunrise at Charles Bridge

My favorite thing to do in Prague was to walk over the Charles Bridge for sunrise. The light hits the statues on the bridge and it’s incredible to see. The streets nearby and the bridge itself are also way less crowded and it’s so beautifully quiet at the time. You get a nice calm moment before the start of the day.

(2) Play at the playground with the best view

At the foot of the Charles Bridge, there’s a children’s playground with the best view in Prague. Once you cross the bridge from Old Town, make a right and walk towards Kampapark. The playground structures themselves are mediocre but the it was nice to be able to enjoy a lovely view while our toddler played. We happened to meet a local family at the playground and it was so fun watching our little ones play together.

(3) Feed the swans near Charles Bridge

Feeding the swans was a highlight for Aidan. We got some seeds from a local sitting nearby and watched Aidan laugh and explore the river bank with a view of the Charles Bridge in the distance. To get there, once you cross the Charles Bridge from Old Town, turn right and walk down the street past the Kafka Museum to a park opening along the water.

(4) Enjoy a beer and a view at Letná Park

Now you might be thinking, enjoying beer and toddlers? Is that possible? But hear me out. There’s a beer garden at the top where you can enjoy cheap beer, kebabs, fries and small bites while enjoying people watching and an incredible view of Prague. Nearby, there’s a fun playground for kids. Win, win in my book!

(5) Stroll through Prague Castle

Prague Castle is a must see when you visit Prague and you shouldn’t skip it just because you are worried about your toddler getting bored. There are pockets of attractions within the castle to see so you’re coming in and out of different buildings (e.g. Gothic St Vitus Cathedral, St. George’s Basilica). There are plenty of outdoor spaces for your toddler to run around and get the wiggles out. Aidan also enjoyed walking through the tiny houses of Golden Lane and exploring the gardens. There’s also a changing of guards that happens at noon which we caught on the way back out of Prague Castle. You can do a guided tour to learn more but we did a self-guided tour and strolled through the grounds to keep things flexible.

Tip: Go early because the lines will get longer and longer throughout the day. If you are staying in Old Town, we recommend crossing Charles Bridge at sunrise and then walking up to the Prague Castle. The beautiful cobblestone streets and buildings up to Prague Castle and the morning light are spectacular!

(5) Explore Old Town Square

Enjoy the 15th century Astronomical Clock and the square of impressive architecture and statues. You’ll also find bubble blowers on the square, which Aidan thoroughly enjoyed. To learn more about the history of old town and the neighborhood, book a walking tour.

Best Places to Eat in Prague

  • Lokal: buzzing hip cafeteria atmosphere with great beer and local Czech eats
  • Eska: restaurant and bakery a little bit outside of city center (15 min tram ride) but really special dishes made from local ingredients. They have high chairs and even brought out color pencils and a coloring book for Aidan.
  • Terasa U Zlaté studně: the best place to enjoy an incredible meal with a view. We came here for lunch to celebrate my mom’s birthday and the food was fantastic. Make sure to make reservations.
  • Café Louvre: 100 year old cafe with a rich history. We came here for breakfast and it was fun to enjoy our meal in such a historical restaurant.
  • SmetanaQ: a gallery and cafe that makes delightful homemade honey cakes and latte art

We had an incredible 3 days in Prague exploring the city with our toddler with so much to see, do and eat! Definitely recommend a visit!
