I had never been to Hong Kong aside from a quick layover, so I was ecstatic when my mom agreed to stop by Hong Kong as part of our two week trip to Asia.  While Phil started his new job in our new city, I decided to take advantage of the down time and go on a girl’s trip and spend some quality time with my mom. There was plenty of shopping and eating and nothing could beat that gorgeous Hong Kong skyline!

Here are our top favorite things to do in Hong Kong when we visited:

1. The Peninsula High Tea

The first thing we did when we arrived in Hong Kong was go to The Peninsula lobby for the ever so famous high tea. With a combination of jet lag and excitement, we put on our Sunday best and walked over to the oldest hotel located in the Kowloon district.

There were no reservations, so it was encouraged to get to The Peninsula early. Even though it was a Wednesday, we arrived at the hotel with thirty minutes to spare, but we were surprised to see a short line already forming for the high tea.

We had high expectations for The Peninsula high tea because friends and others had raved about it. To be perfectly honest, we were slightly disappointed. The fact that guests had to wait in a line instead of being able to make reservations was somewhat tacky for such a classy establishment. By the time we were seated, the line for high tea had wrapped around the lobby. There were certainly a few flowers arranged throughout the lobby and the hotel interior architecture itself was lovely, but the overall design of the high tea space was lacking. There was just no comparison to the flower filled, gold gilded, over the top high tea lobbies in London.

But, the tea sandwiches and tiny desserts were delicious as was the Earl Grey tea, and the service was wonderful. Most importantly, my mom and I really enjoyed relaxing, chatting, and sipping tea. It was a great start to our vacation!

2. Lamma Island

With one day to spare, we decided to visit one of the many islands of Hong Kong. Lamma Island is the third largest island and was only a short ferry ride away from Pier 4. We were recommended to do the supposedly leisurely hike around the island starting from Yung Shue Wan (where the ferry dropped us off) and ending at Sok Kwu Wan (where a ferry would pick us up). I wouldn’t necessarily call this walk leisurely. It had multiple long and very steep inclines, but the trail path was easy to navigate and well-paved. With the humidity and heat, my mom (who is not of the exercising type) struggled through the ~ 2 hour hike. I was so proud of her when we made it to the end, and we treated ourselves to a seafood feast!

3. Endless Food and Shopping

Hong Kong is known for its delicious food and shopping. So whenever we had a chance, we would wander through the night markets and department stores and try Hong Kong food specialties, like dim sum, roasted duck, wontons, and sago dessert.

My mom really wanted to try the clay pot rice bowls that people were raving about. We tried the rice bowl with Chinese sausage and blood sausage with a side of fried green onion goodness.

And dessert… Sago, coconut milk, mango, jello… heavenly!

4. The Hong Kong Skyline

Gorgeous views and the city skyline can be seen anywhere near the harbor and of course, the famous Avenue of the Stars. SONY DSC

Though short, we had an incredible stay in Hong Kong and hope to be back again to see more of the city!
